MetaSearch Engine

A Meta-search engine are search tools that send a user request to several other search engines and/or databases and aggregate the results into a single list or displays them according to their source. A Metasearch engine enables users to enter search criteria once and access several search engines simultaneously.

Metasearch engines do not crawl the Web or maintain a database of web pages but act as a middle agent passing on the query to the major engines and then returning the results.

How a MetaSearch Engine operates?

These search engines create what is known as a virtual database. Metasearch engines don’t compile a physical database or catalogue of the web, instead they take a user’s request pass it to several other heterogeneous databases and then compile the results in a homogeneous manner based on a specific algorithm.
Metasearch engines provide a quick way to determine and compare which engines are retrieving the best match for your information need.

Advantages:-

It searches in many different search engines at a time.
Some Metasearch engines are able to eliminate duplicate records or pages on similar topics at the same address.
Some Metasearch engines will sort your pages into topics or will eliminate duplicate pages.

Disadvantages:-

It can often return too much material.
Because Metasearch are searching in many different search engines all with different rules, complex searching techniques may not be possible.
Some Metasearch engines do not sort the records very well, or might show only some of the search results.
